Del Cerro, Spanish for “of the hill,” lays in the eastern part of San Diego and is considered a wealthy and hilly neighborhood. It borders San Carlos, College Area, Allied Gardens, Grantville, Lake Murray and the city of La Mesa. Del Cerro was established as a neighborhood in 1960 and is currently home to 2,300 residents. The area tends to be vulnerable to wildfires; however, residents continually battle with the city to clear the brush near slopes and around homes. Del Cerro’s homes cater to those with an expensive taste. The small commercial area gives this neighborhood a small-town feel.

Restaurants, Shopping, and Services

Del Cerro is on the smaller side of options for eating out, which is great for families who enjoy cooking at home most of the time. It’s home to few restaurants including Einstein Bagels, and Madra Liquor and Giant NY Pizza. Don’t let the limited options scare you away, there’s plenty of food options outside of Del Cerro. Its neighbor La Mesa is only a ten-minute drive and has tons of options. Del Cerro offers only a few local businesses in the community. This includes the Waring Massage Spa, the SD Flower Shop, and TruSelf Sporting Club. Although the number of businesses is limited, residents still have options for essentials in their community.

Lake Murray is a great place to visit for fishing, BBQing, or simply for running, walking or bicycling around the lake. Mission Trails Regional Park is home to over 60 miles of hiking trails, five peaks, wildlife and plants galore. This park is one of the largest municipally owned parks in the nation. Mission Trails is a go-to for any resident in the Del Cerro area who wants a quick nature escape.

Adobe Falls

Adobe Falls became a landmark in 1973 and has now been closed off to visitors. This landmark lies in a canyon owned by San Diego State University. Adobe Falls is known for the graffiti art all over the rocks and the seasonal waterfall that flows through it. There is no legal access to this spot as it has been fenced off after visitors began leaving trash and graffiti. The city is currently exploring ways to remove the graffiti in an environmentally safe way.

Del Cerro Crime Rates

Del Cerro has very low crime rates, making it a safe neighborhood for kids and families. Of the crimes reported in the past year, the majority were for burglary and theft which is nothing a good home alarm system can’t prevent. It’s one of the safest neighborhoods in San Diego County because of its low crime rates.

Schools in Del Cerro
